A Provençal wedding: lavender takes centre stage

mariage

In July, the Valensole plateau is in full bloom: purple as far as the eye can see and the air thick with the scent of lavender. We are also right in the middle of wedding season. It’s hard to imagine a more natural setting for a wedding celebrated in Provence: the colour, the scent, the light – it’s all already there.

No need to reinvent everything. A few handfuls of dried flowers are enough to give your day that Provençal soul your guests will remember. A fragrant toss as you leave the ceremony, mini bouquets on each plate as place cards: two simple ideas, one single ingredient.

We have been growing and drying this lavender and lavandin in Valensole for four generations. Here’s how to invite them to your wedding.

Why lavender belongs at weddings

Lavender has always been part of the big moments of Provençal life. It was tucked into brides’ linen and used to scent homes on feast days. Here, we even say the plant brings good luck.

For a wedding, it ticks every box: a colour that goes with almost any palette, a scent that instantly sets the mood, and an authentic, rustic feel that suits outdoor celebrations. And unlike fresh flowers, dried flowers can be prepared in advance and won’t wilt on the big day.

Lavender or lavandin: which one for your wedding?

They look alike, but they don’t play quite the same role in wedding decoration.

Lavandin is the ideal choice for decoration and tossing. Fuller and more voluminous than fine lavender, it gives off an intense, long-lasting scent, and its super blue variety keeps a deep colour after drying that lasts over time. It’s the one for large volumes: confetti to toss, aisles, centrepieces.

Fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a softer, more delicate scent. Another advantage: it is edible. Keep it for refined touches and anything close to the table, the sugared almonds or the dessert.

Tip: mix both in the same bouquet. Lavandin leans towards mauve, lavender towards deep violet; together, the result is livelier than a single variety.

Lavender confetti: a 100% natural toss

As you leave the ceremony, a lavender toss is a lovely alternative to paper or plastic confetti. The flowers fly up, fall in a purple shower over the newlyweds and release their scent as they go. It looks superb in photos, and there’s nothing to worry about on the ground: it’s all biodegradable.

How to do it

  1. Allow about one to two handfuls of loose flowers per guest.
  2. Prepare small kraft paper cones, cornets or mini muslin bags in advance to hand out at the entrance.
  3. Have guests toss the flowers as you come out, arms raised, so the lavender shower falls beautifully on the couple.

Important: more and more venues ban paper or plastic confetti. Dried lavender, 100% natural and compostable, is almost always accepted, but check with your venue anyway.

Tip: for a denser, more colourful toss, loose lavandin is perfect. Mix in a few fine lavender flowers for the scent.

Mini bouquets as scented place cards

On the table, place cards are often simple pieces of card. Replace them with a mini lavender bouquet tied with the guest’s name: it shows their seat, gently scents the table and slips into a pocket or bag on the way home. A place card, a decoration and a wedding favour all in one.

You will need

  • A few sprigs of dried lavender or lavandin (5 to 7 sprigs per bouquet).
  • Natural raffia or linen string (about 20 cm per bouquet).
  • A small kraft label and a pen for the name.

How to do it

  • Gather the sprigs into a small bunch, heads aligned, and trim the stems evenly with scissors.
  • Wrap with raffia, go round twice, cross and finish with a simple knot.
  • Slip the label under the knot or tie it to the raffia, then place the bouquet on the plate or napkin.

Tip: these mini bouquets can be made several days in advance and won’t spoil. A real time and stress saver in the week of the wedding.

Note: if the bouquet touches food or tableware (plate, glass, sugared almonds), choose fine lavender, which is edible. Lavandin is not.

Going further: lavender throughout your decoration

Once you have the flowers at home, the ideas keep coming: a few sprigs in napkin rings, loose flowers in lanterns along the aisle, little scented sachets as wedding favours, or lavender heads scattered along the table runner. The same flower works everywhere, and the look comes together on its own.

Fine lavender essential oil is a concentrated product. It is not a substitute for medical treatment and has no therapeutic purpose. In case of persistent sleep problems or significant anxiety, consult a health professional. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or for children without prior medical advice. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do a skin test before any extended application.

How much do you need? Our guidelines

To help you plan calmly, here are a few rough quantities. They are only a guide: it all depends on how generous the toss is and the size of your bouquets.

  • Toss: one to two handfuls per guest. Our loose lavandin is sold in 1 kg units.
  • Place cards: 5 to 7 sprigs per bouquet, one bouquet per guest.
  • Table and aisle decoration: allow some extra – dried lavender keeps for months without losing its scent.

Good to know: delivery is free on orders over €59, and one parcel can easily cover a medium-sized wedding. If you’re unsure about quantities, our team will advise you by phone.

The finishing touch: reviving the scent with essential oil

Dried flowers keep their colour for months, but their scent gradually fades over the weeks. If you ordered your flowers in advance (a good idea for peace of mind), a touch of essential oil restores all their fragrance just before the big day. It makes the difference between a pretty decoration and one that truly smells wonderful.

How to do it

  • The day before, put a few drops of essential oil on the loose flowers and inside the cones, and one drop on each mini bouquet.
  • Gently mix the loose flowers to spread the scent, then leave to rest.
  • Close the containers until morning: the scent spreads and settles on the flowers.

Note: always put the essential oil on the paper or the flowers, in advance. Never directly on guests’ skin or hair. For anything close to the table, choose fine lavender, which is edible; the stronger lavandin is better for scenting a large volume of confetti.

Lavender grown and dried in Valensole

Our flowers don’t come from a wholesaler: we grow, harvest and dry them ourselves on the Valensole plateau, organically since 2002. No pesticides, no synthetic treatments, harvested at their peak to concentrate all their scent.

That’s what makes the difference on the big day: a vivid colour, a true scent, and the certainty of offering your guests an authentic piece of Provence. Selling direct, with no middlemen, also means we can offer you a fair price.
