Fine lavender essential oil has been known since ancient times to accompany rituals of well-being and rest. A few drops in a diffuser, a few drops on the pillow: these are simple, non-prescription gestures that can be integrated into an evening routine.

Why use fine lavender for sleep?
The essential oil of fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is renowned for its soothing, calming and anti-stress properties. This is the oil we produce on our Valensole estate: grown between 600 and 1,500 meters above sea level, distilled on the farm using a traditional method handed down for four generations, and organically farmed since 2002.
Its soft, floral, soothing fragrance is different from that of lavandin: less camphorated, less tonic, more suited to evening use. It’s this aromatic profile that makes it the natural choice for a night-time routine.

Diffusion: preparing the bedroom before bed
Diffusion is the most common way to use an essential oil to promote relaxation in the evening. A few drops in a diffuser allow you to enjoy its soothing, relaxing effects without skin contact.
The protocol
- Add a few drops of fine lavender essential oil to your diffuser, as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Diffuse for 20-30 minutes in the bedroom, with windows closed.
- Switch off the diffuser before going to sleep. Do not diffuse continuously during sleep.
Important: do not diffuse essential oils in the presence of infants, young children or pets, and air the room regularly.
The pillow: the simplest gesture
This is the most accessible use, with no equipment required. Place 1 to 2 drops of fine lavender essential oil on your pillow or a nearby handkerchief. The fragrance is gently released during the first few hours of sleep.
Tip : if you find the scent too strong directly on the pillow, place the drops on a handkerchief slipped under the pillowcase. The intensity is softer and the linen doesn’t leave a trace.
Precaution : do not exceed 2 drops on the pillow. Essential oil is a concentrated product. Excessive doses can irritate mucous membranes and disrupt sleep rather than promote it.
The five-step evening routine
These gestures can be combined into a simple routine that can be repeated every evening. Regularity counts as much as the gesture itself: the body and mind gradually associate these olfactory signals with preparation for sleep.
- Turn off screens 30 minutes before bedtime.
- Start the diffuser with 3 to 5 drops of fine lavender essential oil.
- Take a warm shower or bath with cold-saponified lavender soap.
- Place 1 to 2 drops of essential oil on a handkerchief near the pillow.
- Turn off the diffuser, dim the lights and let the fragrance work.

Fine lavender or lavandin for the evening?
Both essential oils come from our Valensole fields, but they don’t have the same aromatic profile.
Fine lavender is soothing and gentle, recommended for relaxation and sleep. Lavandin is more tonic, with stronger camphor notes: it is better suited to daytime use (cleansing, purifying diffusion, muscle relief) than to night-time use.
For the evening routine, we recommend fine lavender.
