Lavandin has been part of the Provençal landscape for generations. Hardier and more productive than true lavender, it is the king of the home: home fragrance, laundry, household cleaners, body cosmetics, wardrobe sachets.
Since 1932, our family has grown lavandin on the Valensole plateau, organically since 2002, and distilled it the traditional way. Here is how to use it, variety by variety.
Lavender or lavandin: the difference in brief
Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) is a natural hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. It produces much more essential oil, with a stronger, slightly camphorous scent. True lavender, softer, is rather used for relaxation and sleep.

Grosso or super: which lavandin for which use?
Not all lavandin varieties are used the same way. On the plateau, we mainly grow these two:

How to use it: the right doses

Lavandin grosso in the home
With the strongest and longest-lasting scent of all lavenders, grosso is the home’s best friend:
- Indoor freshener: added to cleaning water or as a spray, it leaves the house clean and fragrant.
- For the home : it has always been used to scent household products.
- In wardrobes : in sachets, it scents linen and drawers.
- Laundry: a capful instead of fabric softener, and your laundry smells of Provence.
- Home fragrance: in a diffuser, a spray or with a dried lavandin bouquet.

Production of lavandin-based organic household products

Lavandin grosso for making body cosmetics
Its strong, long-lasting scent makes grosso a top ingredient for homemade or artisan cosmetics: cold-process soaps, balms, deodorants, shampoo bars. The scent holds, even after saponification.
It is the one we use in our lavandin shampoo bar and our lavandin balm.
For your own recipes: 1 to 2% essential oil in the preparation, about 20 to 40 drops per 100 g.
Lavandin super for massage and foot baths
Softer and less camphorous, lavandin super is the favourite for body care:
- Massage after exercise: 10 drops in 50 ml vegetable oil, massaged into the muscles after sport or a physical day.
- Foot bath: 5 drops mixed with a spoonful of salt, in a basin of hot water. Perfect at the end of the day.

Frequently asked questions about lavandin
Is lavandin essential oil dangerous?
Used correctly, no. Like all essential oils, it is highly concentrated: never swallow it, always dilute it before applying to the skin, avoid the eyes. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or young children. Do a patch test in the crook of the elbow before first use.
Can you make lavandin tea?
No, lavandin is not meant to be consumed: its camphorous scent is too strong. For an infusion, choose true lavender flowers: our lavender infusion.
What is the difference between lavandin grosso and lavandin super?
Grosso has the strongest and longest-lasting scent: it is made for the home and cosmetics. Super, softer, is preferred for massage and foot baths.
